There are a lot of understandably impatient LGBT Americans…but while all their criticism is well-intended, some of it is politically naïve.”

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) also said gay activists lobbing criticism after criticism at Obama are ignoring real progress being made on Capitol Hill.

“These concerns are wildly unfounded and silly,” Frank told POLITICO. “As Obama speaks, Congress is about to send him the first piece of gay civil rights legislation in American history,” the congressman said, referring to a hate-crimes bill passed Thursday by the House.

Ever since taking office, Obama has come under fire from leading gay and lesbian activists who say he’s foot-dragging on their top priorities – repealing a ban on gays in the military, expanding same-sex marriage and prohibiting workplace discrimination.

Obama has pleaded for patience – saying he’s believes in expanding gay rights but has so much on his plate with the recession and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that he and Congress just need more time.

Late last month, the Washington Times, Fox News and others alleged that while Jennings was teaching at a Massachusetts school in 1988 he encouraged statutory rape by advising a gay teenager in a relationship with an older man to use a condom. Initial accounts said the youth was 15, but it later emerged that he was 16, the age of consent in Massachusetts.

Jennings, head of the Education Department’s safe and drug-free schools programs, said he regretted the episode and should have reported the incident to authorities. However, conservative groups and Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) are still calling for his ouster.

The latest target of attack by conservatives is Feldblum, a Georgetown law professor Obama nominated to join the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

“She has praised polygamy and contended that traditional marriage should not have privileged status. Apparently, this is just an oddball duck,” radio host Rush Limbaugh said on his program earlier this week.

“I know it’s difficult for a lot of you to understand that there are Americans who don't like this country as constituted,” Limbaugh said. “You think they’re fringe protesters that show up to protest this or that. No. They're running the country now.”

Richard Socarides, the White House liaison to the gay community under President Bill Clinton, said the attacks on Jennings and Feldblum are “pretty much coming from the fringe, but it’s a reminder these issues still have a lot of pop for people in various parts of the country.”

The attacks have a silver lining for Obama. They underscore one aspect of the president’s record gay activists are generally elated about — his nomination of about 100 openly gay and lesbian people to administration jobs.

And the leader of one major gay organization said the attacks on Jennings and Feldblum could shift some of the criticism away from Obama and toward Republicans in Congress – most of whom voted against the hate crimes bill Thursday.

“I think it does that really clearly,” said the advocate, who asked not to be named. Obama “could say, ‘There are people out there who don’t even want you in the room, don’t want you in positions of power. Don’t think as we get into these debates they aren’t going to come out of the woodwork and throw hellfire at us.’ ”

Gay rights leaders said they are satisfied with the administration’s defense of the embattled appointees so far but made clear they’re watching for any signs of wavering.

Jennings and Feldblum “are being targeted not just because they’re gay, but because they’re openly gay and involved in the LGBT civil rights movement,” said Kevin Cathcart of Lambda Legal. “In some quarters of our community, there are concerns about how the administration deals with this…Will they continue backing people up? Will they continue appointing people? How much heat are they going to take?”

And Socarides, Clinton’s liaison, said he didn’t think Obama would get any extra credit just for defending two members of his administration he should stick by anyway.

Some gays and lesbians are still hoping for a major announcement from Obama on Saturday—such as word of an executive order suspending discharges of gays and lesbians from the military. However, there were no indications from the White House that the president would make news.

“He looks forward to speaking directly with the LGBT community about the steps his administration has taken thus far and the progress he hopes to achieve in the coming weeks and months,” White House spokesman Shin Inouye said Friday.

Obama is expected to emphasize what activists deride as “incremental” steps he has taken for gay rights: making federal benefits for same-sex partners more widely available and moving to repeal a ban on immigration by people with HIV.

“They're nice small steps worthy of a President, and a civil rights community, living in the last century. They are unworthy gestures to a core Democratic constituency that was made specific, repeated promises in exchange for its votes, promises that are now being rewritten to ease the political pain of true leadership,” John Aravosis wrote Friday on Huffington Post.

But Frank argued some of the advocates are missing the point – that while they complain about Obama, serious work is getting done on Capitol Hill.

“We are on track to pass four pieces of major civil rights legislation,” Frank said, citing the hate crimes measure, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a rollback of the ban on gays in the military, and a measure to give health and life insurance benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.

“If people in the gay community who are complaining about Barack Obama ... would instead call their senators, we might have the 60 votes we need to pass the bills,” Frank said.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs struck a similar tone Thursday, urging those seeking a repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy to direct their energies to Congress.

Even if Obama plans no substantive policy announcements Saturday, there are things he could say to energize the crowd. Some would like Obama to make a forceful statement against a measure Maine voters will take up in November to repeal a new state law authorizing same-sex marriage.

A spokeswoman for one major conservative group faulted Obama for speaking to the Human Rights Campaign, which she called “the most radical homosexual group in the country.”

“It’s almost as if President Obama seems to be acting as an arm of gay activists who are working to silence Christians,” said Candi Cushman of Focus on the Family.

She also denied that Jennings and Feldblum were being targeted because of their sexuality. “This is not about their private life. This is about the public policy they are pushing,” the spokeswoman said.

Frank said any gay person who needed to be reminded that the community faces strident opposition is simply out of it.

“I wouldn’t let them vote,” the congressman said, before adding, “I guess you have to let them vote because it’s in the Constitution, but I wish you didn’t.”

An historian has claimed to have discovered the real identity of Jack the Ripper, and believes the notorious Whitechapel murderer was also responsible for killing two more women.

Trow's research is rooted in information from a 1988 FBI examination of the Ripper case, which had worked up a comprehensive criminal personality profile.

The portrait drawn up of Jack was as a white male from the lower social classes, most likely the product of a broken home.

It was also thought he would have had a menial job but with some anatomical knowledge, something like a butcher, mortuary or medical examiner's assistant or hospital attendant.

It is known that Mann was from an extremely deprived background. His father was absent for much of his upbringing and he had spent some time as a child in a workhouse.

Trow said: "I wanted to go beyond the myth of a caped man with a top hat and knife, and get to the reality, and the reality is simply that Jack was an ordinary man."

Trow makes another startling conjecture, that the Ripper killed another two women.

He believes Martha Tabram, found with 39 stab wounds to her body in Gunthorpe Street, was the first of Jack's victims, and Alice Mackenzie, brutally murdered eight months after the confirmed five killings, was his last.

The two women, along with Polly Nichols and Annie Chapman, would have been delivered to the Whitechapel mortuary in which Robert Mann worked.

After the killing of Polly Nichols, Jack's first recognised victim, Mann unlocked the mortuary for the police so they could examine the body and as such, was called as a witness in her inquest to help establish the cause of death.

Most damningly, he undressed Polly's body with his assistant, despite being under strict instructions from Inspector Spratling to not touch the body, and Trow suspects that this was an opportunity to admire his handiwork.

The Coroner, in his summation of Robert Mann's testimony, concluded that, "It appears the mortuary-keeper is subject to fits, and neither his memory nor statements are reliable."

Professor Laurence Alison, Forensic Psychologist at Liverpool University, who features in the documentary, said: "In terms of psychological profiling, Robert Mann is the one of the most credible suspects from recent years and the closest we may ever get to a plausible psychological explanation for these most infamous of Victorian murders."

Trow's is the latest in a long line of theories about who Jack the Ripper was. More than 100 suspects have been proposed over the years, including a member of the royal family, a doctor and even the artist Walter Sickert.

St. Michael's mount

St. Michael's mount is located in Marazion Cornwall, about 9 miles from the Lizard peninsula. The castle of St. Michael's was dated back to the 12th century, and was owned by St Aubyn family since the 17th century. In the 1954 Francis St Aubyn, the 3rd Lord St Levan, gave St. Michael's mount and a large endowment fund to the national trust, retaining a 999-year lease for the family to live in the castle. While the national trust now handles and ensures the preservation and conservation of the mount, St Aubyn family still continue to live and manage the island as they have done since the 17th century.

This is somehow a great product, but the problem with this is that it gets a signal through mobile phone coverage, so if your child is out of mobile coverage area, then it is impossible for you to track him or her down, also I don’t think this product should replace parental supervision.

Lady Dai tomb among richest finds in China history

LOS ANGELES – Lady Dai was a Chinese nobleman's wife in her mid-50s when she died of a heart attack. She was overweight, had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver disease, gallstones and her arteries were almost totally clogged.
She didn't live the healthiest life but she left behind one of the most perfectly preserved bodies in history. She was buried about 2,100 years ago. Her tomb was found in the early 1970s on Mawangdui, a hill in Changsha, near the capital of Hunan Province in China. More than 1,400 equally well-preserved artifacts found around her were designed to help her in the afterlife.
"The Han Dynasty is the foundation of Chinese culture," Susan Tai, Curator of Asian Art for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, said. "We are looking at a tomb in Southern China from a very important cultural region that contributed some of the greatest literature and mythology and art to China."
The museum will host "Noble Tombs at Mawangdui" from Sept. 19 to Dec. 13. The exhibition of Lady Dai artifacts from the Hunan Provincial Museum stopped in New York earlier this year, then headed to Santa Barbara, about 90 miles west of Los Angeles.
There are 68 items in the collection. Ninety percent of those came from Lady Dai's tomb because it was in such good condition.
Mawangdui was actually home to three tombs. Lady Dai's husband, Li Cang, was the prime minister of Changsha. He died in 186 B.C., 20 some years before his wife died.
"His tomb was looted repeatedly in antiquity. There were no remains. All the treasures were gone. However, several coin-sized seals were found in the pit. They identified the tomb to be Li's. They also helped identity his wife's tomb," Tai said.
The third grave, tucked slightly under Lady Dai's, is believed to be that of one of the couple's two sons, although some believe it was Li's brother. The man apparently died in his 30s. There were skeletal remains and many artifacts in his tomb, including a library of 50 books written on silk and bamboo slips.
The volumes focused on the military and medicine, including sexual health. The items show women loved beauty and men attached importance to martial arts.
When Lady Dai's tomb was first opened, there were gasps because there was no decay, Tai said. Oxygen took an immediate toll, but even today, her body is well preserved at the Hunan Provincial Museum.
Modern day scientists are still working on ways to preserve bodies as well as Lady Dai's, but they've found several reasons why it remained in such good shape. Her family wrapped her in 22 dresses of silk and hemp, bound her with nine silk ribbons and covered her face with a mask. All the clothes filled the coffin and it was perfectly sealed, keeping air out. There were inner and outer tombs, like nesting boxes.
Nearly 20 gallons of an unknown liquid were found inside the coffin. A thick layer of white pastelike soil was put on the floor and the tomb was nearly 50 feet below the surface. She was surrounded by massive amounts of food, wine, lacquered dinnerware and drinking vessels, 46 bolts of silk, more clothes, books, makeup and other symbols of wealth.
Lady Dai's tomb provides a glimpse of the opulent and elegant life she led. Lacquered vessels had replaced bronze as the favored material for the elite.
"Han Dynasty texts say that a lacquered cup required the effort of 100 men to make and cost 10 times more than one made of bronze," Tai explained. Raw lacquer was toxic and could kill or deform those who worked with it if they were not careful.
Lady Dai's hair was thinning so she used a hairpiece and two combs to form a bun behind her head. One comb had wide teeth for untangling, while one had smaller teeth for scrubbing her scalp. Some of the vessels and combs will be part of the exhibit.
A T-shaped piece of silk with a painting of Lady Dai draped over her coffin is the earliest portraiture in Chinese painting, Tai said.
The original painting is one of four items too fragile to leave China, so life-size reproductions will be shown in Santa Barbara.
One part of the intricate painting shows Lady Dai dead, wrapped in cloth and surrounded by her descendants, food and drink. The center of the painting shows her standing in profile and walking with a cane as if she is ascending into heaven.
Scholars are still debating what the painting at the top of the T means.
"Many believe it is her in afterlife," Tai said. "Her soul has evolved and integrated into the cosmos."

President Barack Obama has announced a major overhaul of the US missile defence system in Europe.

Bases which had been planned for Poland and the Czech Republic are to be scrapped for now after a review of the threat from Iran.
The US decision marks a major foreign policy shift which could impact on its dealings with Europe, Russia and Iran.
Russia, which saw the shield as a threat, initially welcomed the news but there has been criticism in the US.
The US signed a deal in August 2008 with Poland to site 10 interceptors at a base near the Baltic Sea, and with the Czech Republic to build a radar station on its territory.
The US had said the missile shield would be fully operational by 2012.
President Barack Obama earlier this year ordered a review of the defence system, which was strongly backed by his predecessor George W Bush.
European protection
President Obama said in a live TV address the change was needed to "deploy a defence system that best responds to the threats we face".
He said a review had shown the need to switch strategy to defending against the short- and medium-range missiles that Iran could use to target Europe.
Twice Mr Obama referred to the need for a system that was "proven and cost effective".
The system would stress land and sea-based interceptors.
He said the new approach would provide "a stronger, smarter and swifter defence" of US and allied forces in Europe.
Mr Obama said he had spoken to both the Czech Republic and Poland and stressed his commitments to their defence.
But he said again that Russia's concerns about the old system were "entirely unfounded".
Mr Obama's switch from the Bush plan has already drawn criticism in the US.
John Bolton, who was undersecretary of state for arms control and international security under President Bush, said the move was "unambiguously a bad decision".
He said: "This gives away an important defensive mechanism against threats from countries like Iran and other rogue states, not only for the US but for Europe as well.
"It is a concession to the Russians with absolutely nothing in return."

Iran says its missile development programme is solely for scientific, surveillance or defensive purposes, but there are concerns in the West and among Iran's neighbours that the rockets could be used to carry nuclear weapons.
As part of long-running efforts to tackle the issue, Iran will hold talks on its nuclear programme on 1 October with the UK, China, France, Russia and the US - the five permanent UN Security Council members - and Germany.
'Rogue' states
Russia had seen the US missile plan as a direct threat to itself, despite US assurances that it was aimed at "rogue" states, such as Iran.

Russia's ambassador to Nato, Dmitry Rogozin, initially said the move was "a breakthrough" for US-Russian relations, although they were waiting for official confirmation from the US.
"This means we're getting rid of one of those niggling problems which prevented us from doing the real work," he said.
In November, Russia moved its own ballistic missiles to Kaliningrad, between Nato member states Lithuania and Poland to "neutralise - if necessary - the [US] anti-missile system", President Dmitry Medvedev said at the time.
Mr Medvedev also said Russia would jam the US anti-missile system electronically.
The two countries are currently in talks about reducing their nuclear weapons stockpiles, and the US move could influence Russia to be more co-operative, our correspondent says.

"Ocean's Eleven," the first installment in Soderbergh's heist trilogy featuring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Damon, had not yet come out.
And Damon was mired in his fourth round of reshoots for a long-delayed action thriller that showed all the signs of another turkey, the last thing he needed after his string of duds "The Legend of Bagger Vance," "All the Pretty Horses" and the animated adventure "Titan A.E."
"I was about as cold as you can be in Hollywood," Damon, 38, said in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Soderbergh's "The Informant!" played in advance of its theatrical release this Friday. Whitacre went undercover for two and a half years, wearing wires to build a case about his company's collusion with competitors.
Through it all, Whitacre also gradually revealed his own embezzlement, the amounts of money involved absurdly rising as one lie was uncovered and he made up a fresh one to take its place. While federal officials secured convictions against two other top Archer Daniels Midland executives, Whitacre wound up doing nine years in prison in the very scheme he helped expose.
It's a surprising turn for Damon, who transforms to his core to capture the manic, nervous self-delusion of Whitacre. Damon packed on 30 pounds for the role, and his boyish good looks are concealed beneath stiff hair, thick moustache and corny Midwestern suit and tie.

So the filmmakers centered on the incredulity factor of Whitacre's story and how he managed to string along his FBI handlers with one fib after another. Damon figures the absurdist approach makes "The Informant!" an easier sell to audiences weary of hearing about corporate greed and corruption amid the economic meltdown.
"It's a comedy," he said, "so I think people enjoy it more and will be in a position to listen to what the movie's saying because it's more lighthearted."

Analysts said this shows the financial viability of Facebook, which has faced questions about its underlying business model, despite its popularity, and was a good sign for a potential initial public offering.

"It's certainly meaningful to show that this is absolutely the real deal," said Broadpoint Amtech analyst Ben Schachter. "They are executing. People are spending money on the site."

Since its creation in a Harvard dorm room five years ago, Facebook has emerged as one of the Internet's most popular destinations and is increasingly challenging the Web's established powerhouses like Yahoo IncGoogle Inc. and

Facebook unveiled a revamped search engine last month and is currently testing an online payment system. Facebook users have tripled from about 100 million a year ago.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post on the company site on Tuesday that Facebook reached its goal of being free cash flow positive in its most recently ended quarter. The company had previously projected reaching the target sometime in 2010.

"This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term," said Zuckerberg in the blog post.

Facebook spokesperson Larry Yu said the free cash flow metric does not include any cash from private investment.

DST valued Facebook's common shares at $6.5 billion in a subsequent deal to purchase shares from Facebook employees.

Facebook's becoming cash flow positive ahead of schedule provides another nugget of data to back up the lofty valuations, and according to one analyst, makes Facebook a more attractive candidate for a potential public offering.

"They can command higher confidence from investors now," said Collins Stewart analyst Sandeep Aggarwal, who noted that he believes Facebook could go public in the second half of 2010, or in 2011.

Zuckerberg said in May that any IPO is "a few years out."

Facebook did not provide any other financial details on Tuesday. The company has previously said its revenue was on track to grow 70 percent this year.

Facebook board member Mark Andreesen told Reuters earlier this year that the company will surpass $500 million in revenue this year.

Zuckerberg said in his post that the company is exploring ways to make the service perform faster and more efficiently as the number of Facebook users continues to grow.

But having luck and doing something with it are two different things, and as early reviews trickle in for Barrymore's directorial debut, girl power flick "Whip It," it seems the offspring of a Hollywood legend has found a new career.
"Whip It," a tale of one young woman defying her mother's wish of beauty pageant stardom for the rough-and-tumble sport of roller derby, debuted Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival, and by Monday was being called a "remarkable debut" by show business newspaper The Hollywood Reporter.
Variety said the movie was "a gas" and Screen International weighed in with "Drew Barrymore seems less concerned with crafting a riveting cinematic experience as she is in creating a good time. On that criterion, she has succeeded."
A girl -- or boy -- could do a lot worse.
"I was so impressed with her as a director because she knew what she wanted to see. She really had a strong visual sense of the movie," said Juliette Lewis, who portrays the hard-charging Iron Maven skater on the Holy Rollers team in "Whip It."
"I really feel like I was making the first movie of a young filmmaker," said Lewis.
Barrymore, of course, is the daughter of John Drew Barrymore, who was the son of acting legend John Barrymore -- the brother of Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore.
The 34-year-old got her show business start as a child in movies like "Altered States," and made her mark with audiences with Steven Spielberg's "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" as the young girl who made friends with an alien.
